The UK’s best number plates

In 2016, there were 31.7 million1 cars on our roads, and each of them had their own unique number plate. But in this sea of yellow and black, only a heroic few stand out. These are the few that dare to be different – that have removed the shackles of the standard template, and risen like eagles into the DVLA’s hall of fame. These, ladies and gentlemen, are the UK’s best number plates.

We’ve selected four according to our own, made-up criteria – if you’ve seen a better one, feel free to let us know on Facebook.

The most expensive

In the aftermath of the financial crash of 2008, most people had more important things to spend money on than number plates. But that didn’t stop them doing it anyway. In fact, the number plate market stayed solid throughout the crisis, even while more established markets suffered. An extreme example of their investment-friendly nature comes in the form of the UK’s most expensive number plate: ’25 0.’ This classic was bought for £518,480 in 2014, and is now estimated to be worth a whopping £750,000.

The coolest

Given that ‘cool’ is a word we’re probably too old to use – never mind know the meaning of – this category was tricky. So after careful deliberation, we’ve settled on the most famous one instead. Alan Sugar’s ‘AMS 1’ plate appeared on the opening credits of The Apprentice, making it by far the highest profile plate of recent years. And if you think otherwise, you’re fired.

The most regal

There are a number of people who think personalised number plates are tacky. And given some of the entries on this list, they might be right. But one that definitely doesn’t fall under that label is Queen Liz’s. She owns the registration ‘A7’, which was originally issued by London Council in 1903. So if you’re considering buying a personalised plate, you can do so safe in the knowledge they’ve been given the royal seal of approval.

The weirdest

One mystery driver has decided to use the UK’s least favourite word2 as their number plate. And whether you’re a Great British Bake Off fan, or you’re one of those people whose skin crawls when they hear this word, the registration ‘MOI5SST’ is bound to raise an eyebrow. We’re not sure if this road user has an undying love for Mary Berry, or they just enjoy the thought of creeping out strangers, but one thing’s for sure – this is the UK’s weirdest number plate, and we like it.
