How to save the planet – and your wallet

For petrol heads, the idea of an electric car can take some getting used to. There’s a widespread assumption that green cars are less powerful, less convenient, and exclusively driven by people who are named after seasons of the year. But what Autumn realises – and fans of traditional engines are yet to discover – is that electric cars can surprise you. Here, you’ll find our top 5 reasons for getting one of your own.

1)    They’re cleaner

Okay – you probably knew this one already. But unless you’re looking forward to our planet turning into a ball of fire, this is still a pretty big positive. The Kia Electric Soul EV, for instance, gives off no C02 whatsoever. So when your great grandchildren wake you up from your cryogenic nap, they’ll thank you for saving the world for them.

2)    They’re faster than you think

The Skoda Vision E might be good for the environment, but it’s bad for your heart rate. It races from 0-60 in just 6 seconds; more than enough power for your everyday driving. The Vision E is just a concept at the moment, but Skoda say variants of it will be available very soon – so switching to electric doesn’t have to mean sacrificing speed.

3)    They’ll save you money

As you’d expect, driving an electric car will save you lots on fuel – over £750* a year in fact. But that’s just the start. Electric vehicles are completely exempt from road tax, and the average annual servicing cost is just £94*, so the yearly savings can run into the thousands. And if that wasn’t enough, the UK government will also lend you a helping hand with the upfront cost. They provide up to £4,500 off the price of an electric car, and up to £8,000 off the price of a van – making them an affordable option in the short and longer-term.

4)    They’re more convenient than ever

Rapid advances in battery technology mean you’ll soon be able to charge your car, quicker than your phone. And most come packed with other futuristic features too. One example of this is the VW e-Golf, which you can charge or heat remotely using your smartphone. That way, you’ll never be caught short – or cold.

5)    They won’t let you down

Electric cars have a simple solution to problems with your transmission, spark plugs, valves, fuel tank, tailpipe, distributor, starter, clutch, muffler and catalytic converter – they don’t have any. With far less moving parts than their petrol-powered equivalents, electric cars are far more reliable. So you can enjoy complete peace of mind, even while you’re saving the planet.

The Kia Electric Soul EV and the VW e-Golf are available at Citygate dealerships, alongside a whole range of other electric cars. If you’re thinking of making the switch, book a test drive today.
